This is a very useful and rich resource regarding Africa: A-Z of organizations, research institutes, think tanks, centers, involved in empirical socio-economic research, in budget monitoring, etc. Mapping governance-related initiatives, organizations and projects monitoring government expenditures, the media and cabinet shuffles. E-mail: planetaryjim@yahoo.com
- "A 'stateless' nation is shaping up in Somalia. A handful of libertarians led by Jim Davidson and Michael van Notten are contributing to the Somalis' resolve to remain stateless in an interesting way. They have formed a company to build a 200-mile private toll road (the tokens for the toll will be coined in silver and gold). They are looking for support from the liberty community. Read their plan." UPDATE: The Awdal project is not dead, but it's on a back burner, due to Michael van Notten's death (he was our principal contact with the Somalis) and the United States threatening military posture in the area, all of which has naturally chilled any investor interest in the Awdal Roads project. When the timing seems right again, what will be needed is an entrepreneurial Somali or someone married into a Somali clan as Michael was, since it's a kinship society and, to operate effectively, at least at the outset, someone will be needed who is Somali by birth or by marriage. There are many Somalis in the Diaspora now, so such a person might well be found, perhaps through ISIL. See Michael van Notten's BOOK "The Law of the Somalis" and this review by Howard J. De Nike. Spencer Heath MacCallum, who edited the book after Michel's death, will give a SPEECH on the subject of "The Law of the Somalis" at the ISIL World Freedom Summit (August 11 - 15, 2007).

Source: Institute of Public Policy Analysis, Nigeria / The Comet
Author: Thompson Ayodele
Country: Nigeria
- Free trade is essential for development of Nigeria's economy and the well-being of its people. Nigeria should embrace both free international trade and a capitalist internal policy that will promote the competitiveness of its products, including exported ones. This will do much to alleviate poverty, the country's key problem. Calls for 'review' of Nigeria's WTO membership are misguided. (09/04/01)

- The Law of the Somalis : A Stable Foundation for Economic Development in the Horn of Africa
Source: Red Sea Press, Trenton, NJ
Author: Michael van Notten (1933-2002); edited by Spencer Heath MacCallum
Country: United States
- "Written by a trained and sympathetic observer, this book shows how Somali customary law differs fundamentally from most statutory law. Lawbreakers, instead of being punished, are simply required to compensate their victim. Because every Somali is insured by near kin against his or her liabilities under the law, a victim seldom fails to receive compensation. Somali law, being based on custom, has no need of legislation or legislators. It is therefore happily free of political influences."
