Libertarianism

3H HAREKETİ. .::HÜRRİYET::.::HUKUK::.::HOŞGÖRÜ::.
Source: İ. Erhan Bilici
City: İstanbul, Country: Turkey
E-mail:
The "3H Movement" (Liberty, Rule of Law, Tolerance)[named "3H" because in Turkish the words for these three concepts all start with an H, as does the word for movement] is a libertarian youth organization based in Istanbul with representatives in other main Turkish cities, welcoming Turkey to reform herself regarding civil liberties, individual human rights, rule of law, asking her to tolerate all kinds of diversities within her borders. Turkey must adopt a liberal constitution, its government must respect civil liberties and individual human rights without any hierarchies within those values, practice the rule of law without any exceptions, tolerate all the diversities within the country (for instance ethnic, cultural, social and sexual). And Turkey needs an effective free market economy. A Statist approach, Byzantine bureaucracy and high taxes form an obstacle to the free market. These three facts must be abolished. In Turkish. With an English section.

The Globalisation Institute
Source: The Globalisation Institute
City: London, Country: United Kingdom
The Globalisation Institute is an Anglo-Belgian free-market think tank. Its approach involves "policy engineering" – the development of practical policy options that recognise political realities – backed up by the promotion of those ideas. Its main areas of interest involve developing policies that increase competitiveness, replace harmful regulation, harness enterprise to fight global poverty, promote a positive, pro-technology approach to the environment, and increase world trade. It is philosophically 'liberal', in the European sense of the word, favouring a combination of free markets with individual liberty. Its intellectual influences include the Manchester School anti-Corn Law campaigners like Richard Cobden and John Bright; French economists Jean-Baptiste Say and Frédéric Bastiat; and Austrian economists like Carl Menger.

Idées Action

City: Paris, Country: France
This interesting and very attractively done site of the libertarian movement "Idées-Action," with local activist clubs all over France, founded in 1994 by French politician Alain Madelin, has unfortunately ceased to exist. We link above to the latest archive (1998) at the Internet Archive, but suggest a visit to Alain Madelin's current official website, offering links to his other or associated sites, in particular to Les Cercles Libéraux, which in a way is a replacement for former Idées-Action, as it offers for instance two of its essential resources (the Library and Ideas from A–Z). Several of these sites offer a large amount of essays by libertarian economist Henri Lepage, member of the Board of Directors of the original movement. French only.

One of the two groups resulting from a split, with common historical roots, using the same name and logo. This one is an unincorporated association. "The Libertarian Alliance is pledged to fight statism in all its forms, and to engage in long range propaganda for the Libertarian alternative. A Libertarian society cannot he brought about merely by intervening in the political cut-and-thrust or by a superficial advertising campaign. The roots of the state are buried in thousands of years of history and libertarians recognize the importance of a sustained assault on the foundations of statist ideology, whether it be conservative, fascist or socialist. The primary aim of the Libertarian Alliance is to build up an effectively organized body of committed and knowledgeable libertarian propagandists. Fremskridtspartiets Ungdom
Source: Progress Party (Denmark)
City: Aalborg, Country: Denmark
E-mail: ernst.simonsen@frp.dk
The website of the youth organization (Fremskridtspartiets Ungdom) of the Danish Progress Party (Fremskridtspartiet) has ceased to exist. Archives are here and here. We now link above to the party itself. The party founded in 1972 became famous by entering the Folketing (Danish parliament) in 1973 "with 28 out of 179 seats, making it the second-largest party of the parliament, though it did not form a part of the ruling coalition because the other parties refused to cooperate with it. During the 1980s the party increased its influence, however it ended abruptly due to internal strife. Its founder, the former lawyer Mogens Glistrup, gained huge popularity in Denmark after he appeared on Danish television, showing that he paid 0 % in income tax. The party was placed on the far right of the political spectrum, as it supported political and economic liberalism, believed in radical tax cuts (including removing the income tax altogether), and also vowed to cut government spending. An example is the suggestion to replace the entire department of defence with an answering machine with the recorded message 'we surrender' in Russian." (information between quotes taken from Wikipedia). Danish only.

Institute of Economic Affairs
Source: IEA
City: London, Country: United Kingdom
E-mail: iea@iea.org.uk
The IEA is Britain's premier free-market institute. For well over 50 years (founded in 1955) they've defended freedom in Europe, winning amazing victories during the Thatcher years. Although their site doesn't offer much free content, it does have lots of info on their vast selection of printed publications. This statement of our former editor must now be qualified the following way: "Copies of our regular papers, monographs and short books can be downloaded free. Hard copies can be purchased individually or by subscription." And the site's own reading material and other content has also become rather extensive. — "What is meant by 'free-market'? The core belief of free-marketeers is that people should be free to do what they want in life as long as they don't harm anyone else. On the whole, society's problems and challenges are best dealt with by people and companies interacting with each other freely without interference from politicians and the State. This means that government action, whether through taxes, regulation or laws, should be kept to a minimum. IEA authors and speakers are therefore always on the look-out for ways of reducing the government's role in our lives."

Omega II: The action blueprint for a reforming government
Source: The Adam Smith Institute
Country: United Kingdom
"The Omega II Project is a major initiative by the Adam Smith Institute. Its aim is to produce a complete policy blueprint for an incoming administration – based on the principles of choice, competition, free markets, lower taxes, minimal regulation, personal freedom, and smaller government." Please note: As the link to the original omega.htm file of the Omega Project has become broken and no new URL and no archive could be found, we now link to the flyer announcing this 1982 project consisting of a series of policy reports (leading to a 500-page result) forming a complete blueprint for government, calibrated for its political and economic practicality. Over a hundred of the ideas it contained later became government policy, though not all of them in Mrs Thatcher's time. While the quotation starting this paragraph (by a former editor) seems to well describe the original Project Omega, it refers though to an Omega II Project, which, as far as we could ascertain, must be ASI's 2005 Route Map to Reform: Deregulation by Tim Ambler and Keith Boyfield.

This site (with such a nice flag logo!), which was using the "connect.to" forwarding service, doesn't forward anymore, so apparently has become defunct. As it is interesting though and may be considered a curiosity, we now link to an archive of its first home page in the Internet Archive. We could not locate a successor site, but would like to draw your attention to this Swedish wiki page Anarkokapitalism, where, if you understand Swedish, you can learn about a few more "curiosities" of a rather doubtfully "anarcho-capitalist" sort, regarding Mats Hinze (seven years behind bars was the result...). Libertarians believe in individual liberty, personal responsibility, and freedom from government—on all issues at all times. We don't say government is too big in one area, but then in another area push for a law to force people to do what we want. We believe in individual liberty, personal responsibility, and freedom from government—on all issues at all times." "Britain's most inspiring political party!" (2008)

Kapitalistische Partei Deutschlands (Capitalist Party of Germany)
Source: KPD/ML
Country: Germany
KPD/ML (Kapitalistische Partei Deutschlands/Manchester-Liberale) is a former German political party having used the same acronym as its utmost opposite KPD/ML (Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands/Marxisten-Leninisten). That fact alone makes it deserve a mention here and an archive, as it is defunct now. The site's content is in German only (albeit with many external links to English language quality material), but it is good, original and moreover very entertaining. It is also a historical document on how German university students pioneered the present libertarian movement in Germany. Bryan Caplan wrote to them from Princeton: "It has been four years since I studied German, so I had to take out my deutsches Woerterbuch to understand everything. But it was worth it."

Please note: We link above to an archive of the former site. And here is a great essay on the whole subject by the founder and honorary director of the NCROPA, David Webb, RADA Dip: Pornography, Free Expression and the Free Society (PDF). With no active website anymore that we could locate, this snail mail address and telephone number may still be valid and thus come in handy: 15 Sloane Court West, London SW3 4TD, England – telephone +44.71.730.9537.

Drug Prohibition and Regulation

European Cities on Drug Policy
Source: ECDP
Country: Germany
There may not be much that the U.S. can learn from Europe on matters of economic policy, but when it comes to drug policy, they're far ahead. ECDP is a coalition of member cities working toward harm reduction and partial decriminalization. Please note: We link above to the oldest (1998) archive of this site in the Internet Archive. We could not locate a current site. But you can learn much more, reading The Frankfurt Resolution, which started the thing in 1990. The cities of Amsterdam, Zurich, Hamburg and Frankfurt were the initiators. In 2000, already 20 had signed (17 cities plus 3 Italian provinces). The numbers had further increased, but we are unable to tell the largest figure ever reached as well as the exact current figure. As you will have expected, a backlash came. See European Cannabis Policies Under Attack. Read more here: European Coalition for Just and Effective Drug Policies (ENCOD). A (not) surprisingly large number of websites and documents regarding all this have "disappeared" from the Web. The net result: The powers bigger than the local or regional ones, being less libertarian, attacked and largely won. So far. :-)

Medical Marijuana

E-mail: info@medicinal-cannabis.org
"The Project is a group of organisations and individuals committed to the development of non-smoked prescription cannabis-based medicines for treating a wide variety of conditions with a view to making these medicines available to patients as soon as possible." Update: This is again one of those maddening cases in which valuable information becomes inaccessible through the URL's domain name having become lost or been sold to some virtual peddler of Viagra (unless British government or other censorship was at work here), without us having the possibility to offer instead a link to an archive of the web site in the Internet Archive (in this case because of an exclusion in the original site's robots.txt file). So we disabled the link and wish the link farm good luck without the contribution of libertarian cash!

Alternative Learning Organization / Stichting Alternatieve Leervormen – "...the English and Dutch names of one non-profit educational organization (1999), which as the names imply are about alternatives to forced schooling. Over the years the focus has become more specific, which gave rise to the first two sites on the menu bar. In addition to being one gateway to these more specific sites, this site is to offer support for those who may not want to go that far away from the traditional education concepts." This Dutch foundation offers a portal to the following: Learning Freely Network (in English), Leren in vrijheid (in Dutch), a list with links to 11 Alternative Schools, the Alternative Education Resource Organization (AERO)'s The Education Revolution, and Students Against Testing. Institut Européen de l'Université de Genève
Source: University of Geneva, Switzerland
City: Geneva, Country: Switzerland
Probably the best graduate program in European Studies there is. Hard core study of history of the western civilization, literature, philosophy, economics and political theory, according to the concentration you choose. Note: Not particularly libertarian, rather statist and social-democratic like its alumnus José Manuel Durão Barroso, 11th President of the European Commission. The federalism of its founder Denis de Rougemont now abandoned... (a logical development in the editor's opinion; you choose the direction, either up or down, and up or down it goes, from individual freedom to super-state in this case...)

The University of St. Andrews Liberty Club
Source: The University of St. Andrews Liberty Club
Country: United Kingdom
E-mail: liberty@st-andrews.ac.uk
"The Liberty Club was set up by students of the University of St Andrews to broaden the awareness among the student body of the ideas of classical liberalism, libertarianism and free market economics. As such we aim to follow in the footsteps of our precursor, the famous University of St Andrews Political Economy Club that defended the principles of free market economics in the dark days of Keynesian consensus and global communist insurgence. With the Soviet Union gone and most governments in the world proclaiming the virtues of the free market it may be assumed that the activities of clubs such as ours are irrelevant. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Though communism is, hopefully permanently, dead, socialism is alive and grows stronger by the day. Except, its growth is now subtler, taking the form of regulations, stealth taxes and protectionism. Every day the free market gets further entangled in the web of such policies, the outcomes of which can only bring misery to people across the world.
We, the members of the Liberty Club, wish to contribute in whatever small way we can toward reversing of that trend. In so doing we rely on two fundamental pillars upon which we believe a prosperous and peaceful society can be built. These are the free market and (classical) liberty. Our intellectual roots are to be found in the works of political philosophers and economists like Adam Smith, Ludwig von Mises, Friedrich von Hayek, Milton Friedman, James Buchanan, Ayn Rand, Robert Nozick and many others. In practice, our intention is to facilitate intellectual discourse surrounding the ideas of liberty and free markets by bringing to our ancient University like-minded scholars and public figures of renown. The Club is non-partisan and membership is open to all St Andrews students regardless of their views. We are very pleased to have links with classical liberal organisations such as the Institute of Economic Affairs and the Adam Smith Institute."

NOTE: The website is only temporarily unavailable, therefore we temporarily link to an archive in the Internet Archive. Try again later here. As a safety net, the street address: The Liberty Club c/o The Students' Association, St Mary's Place, St Andrews, Fife, KY16 9UZ, Scotland.

Principality of Sealand
Source: Principality of Sealand
Country: Principality of Sealand
E-mail: contact@sealandgov.org
"Sealand was founded as a sovereign Principality in 1967 in international waters, six miles off the eastern shores of Britain. [...] The history of Sealand is a story of a struggle for liberty. Sealand was founded on the principle that any group of people dissatisfied with the oppressive laws and restrictions of existing nation states may declare independence in any place not claimed to be under the jurisdiction of another sovereign entity. The location chosen was Roughs Tower, an island fortress created in World War II by Britain and subsequently abandoned to the jurisdiction of the High Seas. The independence of Sealand was upheld in a 1968 British court decision where the judge held that Roughs Tower stood in international waters and did not fall under the legal jurisdiction of the United Kingdom. This gave birth to Sealand's national motto of E Mare Libertas, or 'From the Sea, Freedom'." Sealand has existed as an "Independent Principality" for more than 40 years. Its neighbors have been howling because its government through Havenco is providing a "data haven" amidst the international propensity for surveillance. Can Sealand endure? This is their official government site. For more information, see the Wikipedia article. Also see this note on Sealand's Facebook community..
