The first libertarians in Bulgaria have joined together to form the
Bulgarian Society for Individual Liberty, established September 2003 in Sofia. The Society's primary
objective is to contribute to a better understanding and broader acceptance of the values of Liberty:
the inviolability of each individual's personal dignity, property, and life, and the promotion of
individual responsibility, equality before the law, unrestricted economic initiative and competition.
In our organization there are economists, businessmen, translators,
sociologists, journalists, lawyers, etc. Liberty is among the few things that can join together people
who are so different. Liberty – meaning the opportunity for every individual to be the master of his
own life and property. This is what joined us together, this Liberty – the Liberty of the
individual's growth and pursuit of happiness. We believe that individual's prosperity is the ultimate
goal of every sensible being. We are led by our hope that, promoting the ideas of individual liberty,
we will be able to exercise influence in the formation and functioning of the institutions in society. We
wish to change the nation we live in, by restricting the state that rules over it.
We believe that the best way for Bulgaria is to take the Road to
Liberty. This is why we started by publishing in Bulgarian ISIL Director Ken Schooland's worldwide best-seller,
The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible(2003). The Epilogue of this book presents the philosophy
of Liberty, and our determination is to make it widely known.
We are also doing this through short essays in a weekly column,
"I, the Citizen," in Dnevnik one of only a few serious daily newspapers in Bulgaria (from
October 2003 to the present day).
A monthly Internet Flat Tax newsletter
commenced in August 2004.
The second book project of BSIL was first Bulgarian issue of
Libertarianism: A Primer by Cato's David Boaz. The book came off the press in July 2004.
In December 2004 we published Friedrich Hayek's The Road to Serfdom.
We are also putting together a publishing program to popularize in
Bulgaria thinkers like Ayn Rand, Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman.
2005 is "The Year of Ayn Rand" for the libertarian community. Therefore
we are intending to publish two Ayn Rand books: The Fountainhead and Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal
– as a part of an ambitious educational mission by the Bulgarian Society for Individual Liberty
to promote libertarianism in Bulgaria.
